The Legacy
Written and Directed by: Mike Doto
Starring: Jo McGinley, Louis Iacoviello & Paul Butcher
Last year we reviewed another short film from director Mike Doto, Peace. Well, he has sent over his latest short film, The Legacy. This time, Doto handles both the writing and directing for this film and in doing so proves himself as one to watch.
The Legacy is about a boy who discovers that his father is not the plain ol' dad he thought he was. That's all the plot information you'll get from me.
The Legacy is 12 minutes of pure 100% bliss. It is a perfect, flawless, and absolutely fantastic film.
The acting is superb from its perfect cast. As you watch you get this giddy sort of magical feeling in the pit of your stomach. It reminds me of when I was a kid and I got home with a new toy for the first time. It evokes a bit of that Christmas morning excitement.
The music could not be better and the effects are quite remarkable for a film that's not a Hollywood blockbuster.
Doto has given us a masterpiece of a short film. I'm feeling right now as I type this that this is the best short film I have ever seen.
The folks at Warner Brothers should take note here. This is the guy they want for the next Superman film. This is a guy who can deliver the feeling of wonderment that the movies sorely need.
When you get the chance to see it, I would rush out and check out The Legacy. It's a brilliant piece of work that is certain to put Mike Doto's name on the map.

It's hard to believe that it's been fifteen years since the release of Stargate. That's half my lifetime. I still have fond memories of the film and revisiting it these years later reinforced them.
Stargate is the unlikely film that has since launched a massive and much loved franchise. One that I do not follow. My knowledge of it begins and ends with this, the original film.
The 15th Anniversary set is loaded with special features including many brand new ones, including a pretty funny gag real. You also get both versions of the film.
On Blu-ray, the film looks stunning. The 1080p picture is gorgeous and the sound is spot on. Stargate holds up remarkably well. It really is a fun and exciting film that is one of Devlin/Emmerich's best.
The acting is great, the action is stellar. It has a strong story and some great direction.
It seems like movies like Stargate are just not made anymore. In fact the Sci-Fi genre seems to be lagging pretty severely in terms of films, with the exception of the recent Star Trek reboot and District 9, I'm hard-pressed to even think of another Sci-Fi film that came out this year.
Stargate is definitely worth revisiting even if you aren't a fan of the gigantic franchise it has spawned. It's presented perfectly on Blu-ray and makes for a welcome edition to your film collection.
Stargate: 15th Anniversary Edition is available now.

Hugh Jackman passed on hosting this years Oscar ceremony and Ricky Gervais is busy over at the Golden Globes. So who has the Academy settled on for this year? Well, apparently they were also turned down by Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr.
So who does that leave?
How about a couple of legends?
Click the Rawr! to see the Masters of Ceremony!
It's Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin!
This should prove to be an interesting evening.

Here is a clip from Jason Mraz's upcoming live CD/DVD Beautiful Mess: Live on Earth which hits stores on November 10. The video is Jason's performance of his massive hit (a record 75 weeks on billboard charts) "I'm Yours." Great stuff.

Cheri
Written by: Christopher Hampton; Based on the novels by Colette
Directed by: Stephen Frears
Starring: Michelle Pfeiffer, Rupert Friend, Felicity Jones and Kathy Bates
Cheri is a period drama romantic comedy kind of thing that fails miserably on every level. It's boring, not funny, and a little creepy.
The story surrounds Lea (Michelle Pfeiffer), a courtesan (essentially a prostitute) contemplating retirement who is asked by her friend/rival (Kathy Bates) to teach her nineteen year old emo son about women. This leads to a slightly disturbing affair. The guy has a nickname for Lea. If you are close enough to a family that the son has a nick name for you I don't think the next logical step should be a sexual affair. It's way to creepy.
The film is wildly uninteresting. The acting from everyone is terrible. This is supposed to take place in Paris but the leads can't seem to muster a french accent to save their lives. With the talent involved this should have been a great film. Instead it's just a boring, uninteresting disaster. The characters, especially Cheri (Rupert Friend) are almost annoying.
The special features consist of a making of featurette and deleted scenes, neither of which I was interested enough to turn on. In fact, I had to force myself to even finish it.
I would have to say to avoid this movie at all costs. If you are a fan of period movies and must see this movie then fine, otherwise, skip it.
Cheri is available now.
