DVD Review: "All-Star Superman"

Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird, it's a plane, it's… Super Dull!!! Okay That's a cheap shot but after watching the new DC Universe Animated Original Movie "All-Star Superman" that's exactly how I am feeling.

Coming on the heels of such fantastic 2010 releases as: "Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths," "Superman/Batman: Apocalypse" and the exceptional "Batman: Under the Red Hood." "All-Star Superman" just falls flat by comparison.

Visually, "All-Star Superman" looks fantastic, especially on Blu-Ray. And the vocal talent featuring James Denton (Desperate Housewives) as Superman, Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) as Lois Lane and Anthony LaPaglia (Without A Trace) as Lex Luthor is perfect for these iconic roles.

But, the script just doesn't match up.

Without giving too much away, the story is simple… Lex Luthor has finally found a way to kill Superman with a massive dose of yellow solar radiation. For lack of a better word, this causes Superman to contract something akin to cancer and he doesn't have long to live. In his short time left he must try and get his and Clark Kent's personal lives in order and try to do as much good for the world before he leaves forever.

The problem with the film lies firmly on the screenplay which is based on the 12-issue comic book series written by Grant Morrison. Now, I have not read the comic book source material but after viewing the movie - with characters that are introduced and then disappear and story lines that start and stop on a dime - I can only conclude that a story of this magnitude just couldn't be told within the constraints of a 76 minute film.

Maybe if the filmmakers were given 2 hours or even spread this particular story over 2 DVDs via a Part 1 and a Part 2 the original vision of "All-Star Superman" could have soared on DVD. In the end, however, it just feels disjointed at best.

Drumroll please… 4 out of 10 drumsticks!

Music Review: John Waite - "Rough & Tumble"

Logic should dictate that any musical artist with over 35 years and 17 albums of recorded history should be known in households across the world. And yet the name John Waite still might not ring a bell.

No matter. Because anyone with a radio has heard his songs many times over.

From his hits with the 70's band The Babys, ("Isn't It Time" & "Every Time I Think Of You") to his chart-topping solo and possibly career-defining single "Missing You," plus 2 more top five hits ("When I See You Smile" & "Price Of Love") with the "Super Group" Bad English and music featured in the films "Vision Quest," "About Last Night," "Days Of Thunder," & "True Romance" John Waite has been around and is here to stay!

So here we are in 2011, and after a string of solo CDs that were more acoustic than electric, Waite is once again trying to recapture his rock roots with "Rough & Tumble," his first CD of all original material since 2001's "Figure In A Landscape."

The CD kicks off with the title track. With it's heavy guitar riffs and down and dirty lyrics like "it's gonna take the National Guard to tear us apart when things get hard" you are immediately transported back to John's "Bad English" days. That's right: John Waite wants you to believe that he is back and once again ready to be… rough and tumble!

The first 6 tracks on "Rough & Tumble" are absolutely perfect. The CD starts so strong that you might not ever get to the last few tracks; you simply won't be able to stop listening to these 6 over and over again!

There's "Evil" with it's catchy bass line and almost danceable groove, "Skyward" an upbeat positive song about feeling good about yourself and a couple of remakes too including Waite's own "Mr. Wonderful" from his 1982 debut solo album "Ignition" and the Tina Turner penned rocker "Sweet Rhode Island Red." The lyrics to this song seem to be autobiographical about Turner's life so having someone else sing them and have that person be a man seems a little weird but for me it works. I applaud Waite for putting himself out there and letting the listener know that a good song is a good song no matter who sings it.

Now, if you're wondering "where are the ballads" they are here too including "If You Ever Get Lonely" a song about a lost love who isn't coming back. It would definitely be a #1 single if this were 1989 (and trust me that's a good thing)!

The CD ends with kind of a mixed bag of tunes that range from quirky spoken word "Peace Of Mind" to countrified acoustic "Hanging Tree."

Although this is not a CD full of flat out kick-ass rock songs - as the title "Rough & Tumble" would suggest - this is still a solid effort from one of my favorite singer/songwriters. It definitely deserves to be heard.

Drumroll please… 7 out of 10 drumsticks!!!

Take Me Home Tonight Review

I was able to see an advanced screening of Take Me Home Tonight two weeks ago, followed by a Q&A session with Topher Grace and Teresa Palmer. I thought that the movie was great and really unexpectedly funny.

Initially, I was worried that all of the funny parts were going to be in the previews, but that definitely wasn't the case. Dan Fogler and Anna Faris really brought the funny as well.

During the Q&A session, Grace stated that they wanted to create a movie that was set in the 80s, but wasn't a cliche 80s movie with guys with huge cellphones walking around. The 80s is the setting of the movie and despite the cars and the clothing, I forgot it was the 80s while watching it. The music score is great, but the only disappointment is the fact that Eddie Money's "Take Me Home Tonight" is not actually played during the movie.

Probably some of the funniest dialogue in the movie comes from Demetri Martin's cameo as a wheelchair bound former high school classmate of Topher Grace. This movie is ripe with hilarity involving massive cocaine use, stolen vehicles, alcohol, numerous cameos, great 80s music, and pining for that long lost high school crush.

Overall I rate this movie a 7/10!

3D Star Wars Fail begins on...

Star Wars begins its journey in 3D on February 10, 2012 as The Phantom Menace hits theaters.  I beg of you out there to please not support what is sure to be a travesty (more so than the prequels already are).

Show your Star Wars love by purchasing the Blu-ray set that releases on September 27.  Don't support this 3D conversion.

It sounds like they'll release the films one per year, which if you ask me, is idiotic.  But then again so is releasing them in "3D".

Concert Review: Linkin Park - A Thousand Suns World Tour (#LPLIVE-02-23-2011)

Linkin Park came home strong last night as they brought A Thousand Suns to Staples Center.  Along for the ride was The Prodigy.  The English electronic dance group exploded on stage with a fantastic high energy set that turned me from meh to wow after the first couple songs.  They hit all their staples and closed out with Smack My B*tch Up proving to be dazzling way to kick off what would be a spectacular show.

After a short intermission, Linkin Park took the stage and the house went bananas.  They delivered a set that spans all of their albums.  A perfect mix of old and new that includes songs like In The End, Shadow of the Day, Breaking The Habit (one of my favorites), and newer tunes like The Messenger and The Catalyst.

I have to say, i was sufficiently blown away by this show.  I've always liked Linkin Park but after this show, it's safe to say I love them.  I'm officially a Fan, rather than the casual listener I was before.

They sounded incredible, flawless even.  Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda were at the top of their game, despite Bennington's recent illness that forced some dates to be postponed.

The nearly two hour set was non stop energy beginning to end.  Musically, vocally, everything was perfect.  The stage set up was simple with a large video screen behind them (at one point Mr. Hahn was scratching video along with audio.  Pretty great effect.)

The crowd, I have to say, was great.  They sang along and were held in utter rapt attention by the band, one that was louder than New York according to Chester.

The show had some rather intimate moments as well.  at one point Chester gave a shout out to his son who was attending the show for the first time with his friends and near the end gave a great acoustic performance of The Messenger which had the audience in awe.

It's this varied musicality that makes Linkin Park such a great live act.  They mix rap and rock so seamlessly and then break down into a sweet acoustic performance like that.    Great stuff.
I said before that LP hit songs from all of their albums and career.  Any fan would have been pleased with the set.  The audience sure was.  They erupted with each song.

One of the highlights, aside from the fantastic performance, happened near the end of the show.  A kid, probably 9 or 10, had a sign that he would hold up periodically throughout the shot.  It was a small green sign that read:  First Concert Favorite Band.

As the show edged closer to its ending, Mike Shinoda saw this sign and asked for it.  The kid, ecstatic to be recognized, passed the sign up.  Mike held the sign up for the audience and said . "This is what this year has been about."  The audience screams.  The performance continues.  Afterwards, Mike returned the sign to the kid along with a guitar pick and a wave.

I'm sure that is a moment that kid will never forget and its a moment that shows just how important the fans are to Linkin Park.

If you have the chance to see Linkin Park live, I suggest you take it.  You'll leave a fan guaranteed.  You'll get a show that starts at awesome and never drops once.  Great songs, amazing vocals (especially from Chester Bennington), stellar music, all add up to an incredible night with a band that's better than I ever realized.
