E3 is the Cannes or the Oscars of the video gaming world, and as such it’s with excitement that we can say that 2015’s convention is nearly here. Taking place at the Los Angeles Convention Centre between the 16th and 18th of June, the event, hosted by the Entertainment Software Association, looks like it’s going to be a rip roaring success, with all manner of amazing releases, awesome experiences, ground-breaking news and riveting keynotes being laid out for people both in the industry and in the public-at-large to lap up.
This is a big year for E3. The 2014 show was a rather sparse one when it came to excellent games, PS4 and Xbox One developers being relatively inexperienced in programming for those particular consoles. This year though, things look set to be rather different, and we should hopefully bear witness to the true power of the next-gen consoles. Games such as Star Wars Battlefront, Tom Clancy’s: The Division, Final Fantasy XV, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Halo 5: Guardians and Gears of War: Remastered are going to make this a very, very special show indeed!
It’s not just games that will get a nice dollop of publicity though. Brand new virtual reality headsets Project Morpheus (Sony) and Oculus Rift (Facebook) are definitely going to be present and playable at the expo, however it will be intriguing to see how developers apply these headsets, hitherto only seen playing the biggest and baddest games. Perhaps we might see Euro Palace online matches being played through the headsets, players enjoying casino games in a virtual reality casino? With so many i-gaming players these days, it’s not too much of a stretch of the imagination!
What’s sure is that Elite: Dangerous will be very much available on the head mounted displays (HMDs), gamers and industry members being able to experience face-melting cosmic fire fights in the best manner possible. There’s a good chance we could bear witness to a new Fallout, a Mass Effect, and…Half Life 3? Valve have really done a number on that last one, so much so that we’ll never expect any news about the fabled game, right until the point it’s thrust in front of us, that is!
Console-wise, you can expect a big announcement from Microsoft regarding the Xbox One, and some form of news from Nintendo. We’re not quite sure what, given that details are scarce concerning both games and console developments at the Japanese giant, but your guess is as good as ours at this point.
