UPDATE: Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata interviewed with TIME magazine this week. Among interesting tidbits, Iwata spoke on that Zelda/Netflix series that outlets were reporting back in early Feb. Here’s what he had to say:
As of now, I have nothing new to share with you in regard to the use of our IPs for any TV shows or films, but I can at least confirm that the article in question is not based on correct information…

Now this doesn’t mean the news was completely FALSE, it may just mean it was exaggerated or misinterpreted. For instance, maybe it isn’t live action but animated. I mean, come on, the SUPER MARIO BROTHERS movie was turrible, but the SUPER MARIO BROS. SUPER SHOW Zelda cartoon was fantastic! So why would they all of a sudden greenlight a live-action series on a streaming service they’ve never worked with before! Until we know more, keep your speculations coming in the comments below! So far, my mind’s eye has an animated epic that involves Link trucking across Hyrule to visit the Princess Zelda for the entirety of season 1. Kinda like Thundercats, except nothing but Nintendo cereal commercials…
As reported on 10 Feb 2015: It was announced last Friday that Netflix is developing a Legend of Zelda series for their very successful streaming service. According to the Wall Street Journal (it’s a newspaper, guys!):
The video streaming service is in the early stages of developing a live action series based on “Zelda,” about an ordinary boy named Link who must rescue a princess named Zelda and save a fantasy world called Hyrule, said a person familiar with the matter. As it seeks writers to work on the show, Netflix is describing it as “Game of Thrones” for a family audience, this person said.
“This person” could be anyone! Also, there’s been no news of confirmation since; “[a] Netflix spokeswoman declined to comment. A Nintendo spokesman said the company doesn’t comment on rumors and speculation.'”
Ouch! Rumor and/or speculation?? Damn you, Miyamoto, your love is so withheld! TAKE MY MONEY! Most news sites are referring to the SUPER MARIO BROTHERS movie as the reason Nintendo withholds so much of their intellectual property and keeps it in-house. I don’t blame them! Anybody remember the CD-i games?? But they’ve allowed other developers help produce video games (HAL), so why not TV? It could be promising, if it has any legs…
If you’re excited for the news, give us your best LEGEND OF ZELDA TV PITCH in the comments. Maybe Miyamoto reads PCB, and he’ll use yours!! I hope it’s half as good as the SUPER MARIO BROS. SUPER SHOW Zelda cartoon 🙂 (I legit dig that show, so lay off the jokes, Internet!)[SOURCE]
