Open-World Survival Game With Friggin’ Dinosaurs!

What’s been severely lacking in my life as an adult gamer has been the fulfillment of one of my childhood fantasies – playing with dinosaurs. Sure, there’s been some games that have tried to capture the magic. Dynowarz: The Destruction of Spondylus tried to fill the void by letting you play as a space-marine guy who got to control giant dinosaur robots, but was rather clunky. And it was for the NES, so the technology just wasn’t there.

Turok: Dinosaur Hunter is a more technologically advanced attempt, but still pretty awful. It may have seemed fun back when it came out for the N64, but it’s aged poorly because of the technological limitations of the 64 and the controller. And the platforming. Because we all know how well platforming is from a first-person perspective!

Jurassic: the Hunted

And by God, did I want to like Jurassic: The Hunted, but it seemed to conspire against me at every turn. With whatever awful plot it was trying to jam down my throat, the killing of dinosaurs felt more like it was just pumping enough bullets into them, and not where you hit them. It was just killing them.

Well, I have no idea who the fine folks at Wildcard Studios are, but Monday, they may have made my dreams come true when they showed this.

Ark: Survival Evolved looks to be exactly what I what I have done if my 8 year old self could make any kind of video game. You get stranded in a world with dinosaurs with other people. You have to build shelter, survive with other people, tame some dinosaurs to ride on, make your own weapons, and find some “real” weapons. Oh, and ride giant insects because why wouldn’t I want to ride around on a giant scorpion?

Hey, why not throw some dragons in there for the heck of it?

Seriously, why the hell not?

Anyway, Ark: Survival Evolved is currently being developed for PC, Xbox One, and Playstation 4. While there’s no official release date, the PC version is set to go on Steam Early Access in June with the finished version in June of 2016. No word on the Xbox One or Playstation 4 version just yet.

I’ve always been intrigued by survival games like DayZ and H1Z1, but I’ve honestly had enough of zombies. This, on the other hand, is right up my alley. My only hope is that my daughter gets a bit better at games by the time this comes out so I can buy her a PS4 and we can play this together. Isn’t that what parenthood is all about – forcing your childhood on your kids?

Open-World Survival

What kind of parent would I be if I didn’t try to make her dinosaur gaming memories as cool as this?

I like video games. Talk to me about video games and I'll never shut up. Anything else? Yeah, you're probably on your own.
