Last night Pretenders founder and lead singer Chrissie Hynde closed out the July 4th weekend with an eclectic show at the legendary Hollywood Bowl.
Hynde is currently celebrating her 40th anniversary as a recording artist and last night she treated the SoCal crowd to a setlist featuring her biggest hits with the Pretenders plus tracks from her upcoming Jazz influenced covers album “Valve Bone Woe.”
The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra kicked off the show by impeccably setting the mood for the unique set list of songs that Hynde was about to perform. Taking the stage in high black boots, black t-shirt and ripped jeans Chrissie looked every bit the rocker but was about to showcase a different side of her incredible voice. The first set began with a Billie Holiday cover called “I’m A Fool To Want You” and the crowd immediately knew this wasn’t going to be your run of the mill rock show. The set continued with three more songs from her aforementioned covers album and before heading into intermission Hynde treated the hardcore fans to a rousing rendition of the Pretenders classic “Brass In Pocket.”
After intermission Chrissie started the second set by paying tribute to three of the finest female voices to ever record by singing covers by Nancy Wilson, Nina Simone and Barbra Streisand. After those classics Hynde strapped on her guitar and got the crowd on their feet with nine of the Pretenders biggest hits including “Talk Of The Town,” “Back On The Chain Gang” and “Message Of Love” before closing out the evening with “I’ll Stand By You.”
I have seen Chrissie Hynde perform many times over the last 30 plus years and I must emphasize how incredible her voice continues to be. In fact, if you close your eyes you would think it was 1979 not 2019. She’s just that good and if you’ve never seen her live then what are you waiting for?
As always the sound at the Hollywood Bowl was perfection and the staff polite and accommodating. All in all this one of show might just prove to be the highlight of the entire Hollywood Bowl concert season.
