mick abrahams box set

mick abrahams box setJust one week after a set devoted to Blodwyn Pig, Cherry Red Records have released a set devoted to Mick Abrahams’ first two solo albums. The set, Seasons, is a simple 2 CD set with those two albums newly remastered. As to be expected from Cherry Red, this is another top notch and solid release from the record label.

The Albums
After the break up of Blodwyn Pig, Mick Abrahams would release two albums in 1971 and 1972. Those albums are as follows:

Mick Abrahams (1971)
mick abrahams debutAbrahams’ solo debut almost picks up where the last Blodwyn Pig album left off. This album is a little more psychedelic than bluesy. Even then, there’s still time for some bluesy jams.  Though compared to the Blodwyn Pig albums, this is a little more conventional. Abrahams and his backing band are all in fine form. Overall, a fine album.

Rating: 7/10
Favorite Songs:
Greyhound Bus, Why Do You Do Me This Way, Big Queen, Seasons

At Last (1972)
At last Album coverWhile Abraham’s second post Blodwyn Pig album, this was the first album credited to the Mick Abrahams Band. For this album, the blues/jazz vibes are continuing on At Last but this one feels a little more diverse. Abrahams and his band branch out here: there’s some psychedelic tunes, bluesy jams, folk numbers. The only downside: some longtime fans might see this as Abrahams losing his identity. Even then, it’s an enjoyable album.

Favorite Songs: When I Get Back, Time To Decide, Whole Wide World, Up And Down

Conclusion
As a whole, Seasons is a great set of albums from Cherry Red Records. While there are no bonus tracks, there are some liner notes written by Steve Plinkington. Along with that, both albums have been newly remastered and sound great. If you’re new to the music of Mick Abrahams, this set will start you off well.

Overall Rating: 7/10
