Oh, by gosh, by golly… It’s time for Christmas in the Queen City! A couple weeks ago I got to get in the holiday spirit early and see Pentatonix’s “Christmas in the City” tour!
Who is Pentatonix?
I’ve been a long time Pentatonix fan, after discovering them in 2014 with their breakout cover of “Mary Did You Know?” I’ve been hooked. Pentatonix came to be after the 5 members won NBC’s The Sing-Off. Since signing with a record label, the group has released six Christmas themed albums. Fans of Dancing with the Stars may also recognize Pentatonix’s Scott Hoying from the latest season of the series.
The Music
The set started out with “Christmas in the City”, a song from their latest Christmas album of the same name that was released in October of this year. The album is heavily inspired by the 1940s, and has a wonderful Frank Sinatra sound to it. After doing a couple of holiday classics, the group decided to play a game where they rolled a dice. The dice determined the song as well as what genre they did them in. The funniest performances from the game had to be when they sang “Jingle Bells” in a pop punk style, and then “Let it Snow!” with a hip hop twist.
Pentatonix mainly stayed on the stage, but for the last couple songs they moved out to a B-stage further back in the audience. From there they performed “The Love Medley” featuring iconic love songs from Doris Day to Frankie Valli. This song is also featured on their latest album, and I believed it was one of their best performances of the night. The B-stage was a great opportunity for fans further back in the audience to see the group and interact with them. On the way back to the main stage, Matt Sallee, vocal bassist of the group, hugged a young kid who was clearly a big fan. I’m sure that kid truly believes in the magic of Christmas after that, and maybe I do too…
Conclusion
Overall, seeing Pentatonix was the perfect start to the Christmas season! The group has really progressed from their very first Christmas hits and turned their concerts into a holiday tradition for many!
