Photos and review by Liza Wilson
I am not afraid of concert journalism anymore, I realized after photographing and reviewing COIN on their most recent tour.
COIN is back and better than ever on their first tour in two years. The tour marks their very first headline appearance in Cincinnati. The band has played around the city many times, including sets at the famous Flying Pig Marathon, as well as University of Cincinnati (go Bearcats!).
Renewed confidence
Upon the release of their fifth studio album, I Am Not Afraid of Music Anymore, the band went on a tour of nearly the same name, replacing the word “music” with “tour”. The name might sound like a fun gimmick, but beneath the surface it means much more than that. The frontman of the band, Chase Lawrence, opened up about the meaning behind the album on stage mid-show. Since its beginning, the band has struggled with feeling secure in their music and presence as artists, especially on tour. This can also be heard in the song ‘Let it All Out (10:05)’ which was performed beautifully on piano by Lawrence himself. This tour is meant to give the band the opportunity to face their fears.
COIN was easily welcomed back by their fans. Throughout the entire show, fans screamed the lyrics, jumped, and danced. During one part, COIN was applauded by the audience for over a minute straight.
Plenty of old favorites
The setlist mainly consisted of songs from their latest record, but COIN made sure to add in other favorites from their catalog. During one part of the show, the band performed a medley of their older songs which included “Run,” from their debut album, and “Boyfriend” from their sophomore effort.
Fans will not want to miss COIN on this tour. Whether you’re an older follower of the band,, or just discovering them now, this is a show not to be missed this year.
